The March issue of Linux Format (it has Judge Dredd on the cover and is still 
available at some Barnes & Nobels stores - I saw it at the store in the 
Citicorp building) has an excellent article on backing up disks and 
partitiond using PI, and even a small section on using dd.

The benefit of PI is it will only copy the actual data on a partition, 
whrereas dd will copy the whole partition, unused space and all, and doesn't 
compress any of it.
