If doing "ifup eth1" or whatever number it is doesn't work, then your
card isn't being recognized.  With network cards this is often becaue
the driver in your kernel doesn't know about the specifics of your new
card (read: the vendor has changed things).  Usually a newer driver or
a whole new kernel will make the card work.
