Hello to NYC,
you came to the right place!
there are many place/groups in NYC for FOSS(free and open source
software). NYLUG, GNUBIES, DELUGE, NYLXS to name a few.

NYLUG:hi-tek talk, great mailing list help for all, advanced users, fun
after meeting beer-chatting
GNUBIES: for the new to linux, where no one says 'rtfm'
DELUGE: for info on linux apps, getting things done in linux day to day
NYLXS: FOSS politics, good, cheap linux classes
