Hi NYLUG,
It's been a while since I send anything to the list. But I
think is very good time to report some of my hactivism
activities.
Wow, its been quite a while since I got back to Mexico, and is
HOT, 100 F - 120 F and rising. Well it hasnt been the first
time. Fine, enough chit chat, well Linux has been extremely
enforced by my LUG called GULTAB something like Linux User Group
in Tabasco -Tabasco being the name of my state and yes.. is hot
as the sauce.
Well first we did a diagram describing the strategy of the LUG.
When I physically joined the LUG it was very unorganized and
with just a few members, then I put the plan to the task. We
started with a series of free talks at the local universities,
one after the other, giving free copies of Knoppix and
DemoLinux. We also did small business cards to subscribe to the
mailing list and with the URL of our website
(http://gultab.gnulinux.org.mx).
The next step was talks at the government level, we visit them
various times and to different branches. Start by giving
speeches about cutting cost and the advantage and freedom that
this free software platform offers.
Now we are currently going to the businesses starting at the
corporate level saying:
"Great, you use free software. Now, how can you extend it to the
rest of your company?"
This give us the edge and the seriousnes of a real group,
suddenly we have extended our number to 100-130 and counting. We
have also had the support of the mayor newspapers and have a
column devoted to articles from the group. We also plan to have
a radio show, a database of books from the members. And some
innner development like the GEL - Study User Group (similar to
the one at Linux Society) and workshops ranging from
programmers, dba and desktop hacking.
With the university support we will open 3 to 5 GEL and 1 to 2
workshops per university. Acording to plans we will have up to
13 Gel and Workshop combine ranging on locations from colleges,
to corporation to hospital and state libraries.
The next step is to develop, develop, develop with programs such
as Villahermosa (capital city) Wireless. Which name says it all,
a Wireles WAN across the metro-area. Exploring Linux embedded
and creating of new Open Source busineses, from consulting in
Open source, to developing custom tools for specific biz.
I guess there is nothing much left to say unless that this
'Extreme Hacktivism' was acomplish in just 2 months. :)
Maybe we could start a Gnubies here (like Lyn says), it all will
come as more diversified levels start getting organized. I might
come back to the US by the end of the year, however I am not
sure if I will go to NYC, however I dont want to loose touch
from my connections on the east coast.
Sincerely,
Alexandro
PD: Good Luck on the next Gnubies meeting.
