Sites that "require" IE are often just sites that check to see
if your browser is IE. 9 times out of 10 they still work fine.
A browser like KDE Konqueror allows your browser to pretend that
it's IE and get around these restrictions. There may be proxies
you can use to do this as well.
mplayer with all installed optional codecs can play something like
99% of all the media files I've ever come across.
