You know what struck me, borrowing an idea from sister-city programs, as
in the Yokohama-New York City affiliation, etc., what of sister LUG
programs?
I'd be down to attend, say, an Alan Cox LUG presentation in the UK. I
haven't yet looked at Paul's local LUGs, but you get the drift.
Personally this is appealing to me for various reasons.
o I haven't yet visited the United Kingdom, and I'd love to,
especially with a british friend or acquaintance in the equation.
o S/he might help with cheap lodging recommendations, etc.
o A friend collects teddy bears that are no longer sold in the USA
but originate and are sold in the UK. She's been planning a trip
for just that reason. With the price of roundtrip airfare specials
being so low, last time I checked. <$100.00. It's one more reason
tipping the balance. s/my_our_interests/for_yours_above/
o It's a stepping stone from visiting a sister LUG abroad, becoming
familiar with the process, then delving off to a Netherlands,
Germany, c2k3, *nix conference, say. Moreover, I saw more
interesting (to me) stuff going down is small conferences in Europe
than at this year's NYC Linux World Expo (LWE), by far. Just this
aspect is scintillating to me.
o Not to mention, employment, geek networking to be had, made flowing
in both directions. Though to me, the social aspect is a big
inducement if nothing else.
That's off the top of my head, I could go on, and I haven't yet looked
at a map, or checked whether AC is even in the vicinity of Paul's
mentions. But you get the idea.

Ignore everyone who tells you kernel hacking is hard, special or different. It's
a large program, and bug fixing or driver tweaking can be a best starting point.
It is however not magic, nor written in a secret language that only deep
initiates with beards can read. --Alan Cox
