If you intend to give the drive to someone else

I have found this good

Most HDD manufacturers provide a utility which does a
low level format, in fact writing one then zero
everywhere in the drive (or zero and then one) to
rewrite the whole drive

It takes time (the bigger the drive the longer) but it
seems to be one of the safest ways

but some people are very bright here and have better
and faster solutions for you
